Plan the swap around what you actually wear
Look at the next month on your calendar. Think about work, travel, weekends and any occasion you already know about. Keep useful layers and rainwear easy to reach. Take out pieces from the incoming season in small groups and check which still fit your plans.
If a coat or pair of boots needs a repair, put it with your errands and give it a date. If you won’t get to it this week, make sure you have an alternative ready.
Make stored clothes easy to find again
Put away clothes clean and dry, following care instructions for each fabric. Use containers you can move easily and label them by what’s inside. ‘Winter knitwear’ tells you more than ‘clothes’. Keep a short note on your phone if your seasonal pieces live in more than one place.
Store the things you are most likely to need first at the front, such as a light jacket during a spring swap.
Set up a handover shelf
Give the next few weeks a small transition space for layers you’re still using. Once the weather settles, clear the shelf and finish the swap. Revisit the pieces you didn’t wear last season while you can still remember why they stayed on the rail.
- Check the forecast and your next month of plans.
- Set aside repairs, cleaning and donations before storing the rest.
- Label every container and note where you’ve put it.
