How to declutter your wardrobe, one category at a time

A wardrobe edit is easier to finish if you start with a single category. Choose jeans, jumpers or shoes and compare those pieces side by side. You can see what you actually have and make each decision without a bed full of clothes waiting to go back.

Hands arranging neutral clothes on a rail

Begin with the clothes you already reach for

Pull out the pieces you wore recently and ask why they work. It might be the fit, how easily they wash or the fact they suit several parts of your week. Keep those favourites easy to find and use them as a reference when you look at similar pieces.

Give an occasion outfit or useful seasonal piece a different test from everyday clothes. If it serves a clear purpose and you want to keep it, consider storing it away from the daily rail.

Separate the choices you can act on now

Set out a place for pieces you wear, repairs you genuinely plan to make and things you’re ready to pass on. If something needs trying on, put it in one small group and deal with it separately. Take your time with sentimental pieces or clothes tied to a change in your life.

Give repair and donation bags a named next step. A bag that has somewhere to go is easier to move along than one that sits indefinitely by the door.

Put the everyday wardrobe back first

Arrange clothes in the order that helps you get dressed. Group by type if you usually build an outfit from separate pieces. Keep ready-made combinations together if you reach for the same work outfits. Leave enough room to slide hangers apart and put a folded item back without lifting a whole pile.

  • Finish one category and return what you’re keeping before starting the next.
  • Give occasionwear and seasonal items their own place.
  • Test the arrangement on a normal morning and adjust anything you have to hunt for.
